At the Latino Leaders Network meeting politicians reflect on primary wins and losses

When Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea planned to attend the Latino Leaders Network luncheon, a regular gathering of politicians, business people and power players, she thought she’d be celebrating.

The date fell near the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month, and on the heels of primaries that saw multiple Latinos on the ballot for top positions in the state, Gorbea included.

Some won. Some lost.

Gorbea, who ran a hard-fought campaign for governor, lost.

Standing before the gathering’s more than 200 attendees at the Omni Providence Hotel on Friday, Gorbea described it as “a bittersweet moment.”

She also reflected on what unfolded before that moment in the chaos of campaigning.”Greater forces — political, economic — started to honestly tear us apart,” Gorbea said. “We started cannibalizing our own. We worked on different campaigns. We resurrected grudges over who didn’t speak to so and so. It was all the fog of war.”These days, Gorbea said she’s been spending more time with family and less time on social media.
