A 34-year journey with Vida en el Valle comes to an end | Opinion

It’s time for me to finish a 34-year journey that began with a three-year commitment to help launch the first bilingual weekly in the San Joaquín Valley and continues today as I take a different path in my professional career.

This week, I became the Opinion Page Editor at The Fresno Bee.

So, how do I say adiós to a publication that has consumed three-quarters of my journalism life?

First, thank you to all the Vida en el Valle readers, staff members and advertisers who have gone on this richly rewarded ride that began on Aug. 29, 1990. We were told that Latinos were not readers, that they preferred television and radio for their news. Our response: Give them something worth reading, and they’ll embrace us.

This publication — which at one time had five zoned editions with a weekly circulation of 165,000, and an editorial staff of seven — has been recognized 14 times as the nation’s best in its category by the National Association of Hispanic Publications.
