‘The Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine Vote’ at Stages delves into politics and identity

‘The Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine Vote’ at Stages is a satire about politics and the ‘Latino monolith’.

In title alone, “The Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine Vote” says a mouthful.

The play, currently having its world premiere at Stages, pokes fun at the hypothetical monolith that has been analyzed and exploited by politicians, strategists and newscasters. It’s the elusive block of Latino voters that many believe can win or lose U.S. elections.

Playwright Bernardo Cubría, who grew up in Houston, insists things are much more layered.

“For me, this play is about allowing our community to be given the nuance that other communities are given, and to say loudly and proudly that we’re not a monolith, that we have our tíos tóxicos and tóxicas, and that we come in all shapes and sizes, and that we don’t agree with each other on every single thing,” Cubría says.

“To think that everyone from Tijuana to Buenos Aires agrees on every single issue is an insane idea.
